1 [lbo-talk] Ellen Willis dies -- rank: 1000
Ellen Willis, the writer on feminism, politics, and pop culture, died. She was a cranky, difficult person with an unfortunate Zionist streak, but she was very talented and smart. It's sad to see her go. I interviewed her, along with several other contributors to Implicating Empire, back in March 2003; it's at <http:// www.leftbusinessobserver.com/Radio_1.html#030327>. Doug

I was on a panel with Willis at Brooklyn College about the media and the Drug War (along with David Boaz of Cato). She was very friendly and supportive. Good thing the panel wasn't about Israel and the Palestinians. I doubt the good vibes would've lasted past the opening remarks. Dennis

What a kvetchy announcement, Doug! Can we locate the url for her magnificent debunking of Tom Frank in Stanley's new journal, Situations(?). Is that article what's eating you, Doug? The funeral will be at Riverside Chapel, 76 and Amsterdam, 11:45 am Sunday Nov. 12. http://blog.pulpculture.org/2006/11/09/ellen-willis-presente/ I was a big fan, as was a reader, who maintains the Wiki pages about Willis. The link above includes a lot of links and material that's been discussed in the past. Trying to get mainstream feminists interested in her work, particularly when she cremates the notion that you can buy / dress/ personally behave your way to revolution is like banging your head against a concrete wall. "You know how it is, come for the animal porn, sta ...

And that piece on Tom Frank was Willis at her best, I thought. (The URL is <http://ojs.gc.cuny.edu/index.p ...

I have no doubt that this is true. But what I sense here, with the body only a few hours cold, is vast disrespect, fairly customary on this list, for feminism and for this major feminist figure. Shameful beyond belief. There's a fair amount of assholishness about feminism on this list (nothing compared to the wider society, of course), but not generally from Dennis, and definitely not from Doug. They'd talk like ...

Oh please Jesse. If other listmembers and I were really disrespectful of feminism, we'd have paid Willis no mind, in life or in death. Doug
