47 [lbo-talk] Right-wing thinktank HCTrends puts out study on benefits and pay of Wisconsin public employees -- rank: 1000
This is the new information that the Wisconsin right-wing is spreading around to counter the Economic Policy Institute's earlier study that public sector employees are underpaid in comparison to similarly educated private sector employees: "Benefit Reform Could Save School Districts Hundreds of Million$ MacIver News Service | April 27, 2011 [Milwaukee, Wisc...] School districts in southeastern Wisconsin are paying twice as much for health insurance as private sector companies in Milwaukee, ...

48 [lbo-talk] Alberta Darling Becomes Fifth Republican Senator to Face Recall in Wisconsin -- rank: 1000
Alberta Darling, you are recalled! So, today in Kletch Park a few blocks from my home, the Recall Alberta Darling committee held a press conference stating that they had around 30,000 signatures (20,000 were needed) calling for a recall of Wisconsin Republican State Senator, Alberta Darling. They now will submit the signatures to the state government in Madison. I couldn't go to the press conference, so I gave my parents my camera and here are some pictures (I set them to be available to everyon ...

49 [lbo-talk] Found Wisconsin votes don't add up -- rank: 1000
Doug, I really wish it was about political conviction, but from what I have seen, it is simply that politics is uninteresting to a lot of people and they can't be bothered. maybe if Rogers was running on the Packer Party ticket. Yah Michael, me too... And I still think there is enough history with her and fishiness to compel a publicly funded accurate recount, but I have a sinking feeling that the results will be similar. 52 [lbo-talk] Found Wisconsin votes don't add up -- rank: 1000
Yah, sadly I think it was a case of her complete incompetence. I definitely think she should be fired, but i think the evidence doesn't point to criminality in this case. Waukesha is rabidly Republican, a blot on the map between Milwaukee and Madison. Taking out Waukesha votes, Kloppenburg would win the elections hands down. But it doesn't surprise me that they had such a high turnout, they tend towards active conservative extremism. These issues are moving targets and it seemed a plausible argu ...

53 [lbo-talk] Comments on WSJ article "The Price of Taxing the Rich" -- rank: 1000
Thanks Sean, Those are all good answers, but for a slightly different argument. What I thought was novel about the argument in the article, was that it attacks the issue of taxing the rich from another position. It somewhat sidesteps or anticipates our usual counterarguments and argues that the volatility of a tax base that relies on the income of the wealthy is problematic, not so much that taxing the wealthy in and of itself stifles the economy (though there are hints to that in the article). ...

"Nearly half of California's income taxes before the recession came from the top 1% of earners: households that took in more than $490,000 a year. High earners, it turns out, have especially volatile incomes their earnings fell by more than twice as much as the rest of the populatio ...

56 [lbo-talk] Achcar's latest -- rank: 1000
There is a difference between Libya and Israel though. Israel is directly under the patronage of the US. If enough people/states demand a no-fly zone and the US feels the need to play the impartial policeman it pretends to be, they will just say (like Bush Sr. did regarding Shamir's statement that he would funnel US funds directly to the settlements), you are embarrassing us and you will stop, and Israel will complain but follow orders. 57 [lbo-talk] Libya -- rank: 1000
I am very well aware of how dumb smart-bombs are, and I know the potential for civilian carnage...I do think that your equation of fully fueled jet liners with missiles is a bit inaccurate...they are different ordnance. Whatever is done...actively taking out Ghadaffi's forces or standing back will result in some, most likely a lot, of civilian death and destruction...so that can't be the deciding factor...it lies above that in what social and political long term results will stem from this...wha ...

58 [lbo-talk] Libya -- rank: 1000
But can you accurately say that they are bombing the living shit out of the entire country? Or hitting tanks, Ghadaffi's offensive units and air forces? Should they be doing this even if that is "all" they are doing? I REALLY do not want to sound as if I am supporting US/EU actions, because I am very queasy about it, but I want to be accurate in assessment and description of what is going on. I think what the US/EU are doing is definitely not out of altruistic interests, it is a dange ...

I'm seriously interested in your understanding of this. If the US and company didn't intervene and the uprising was completely crushed, that would be good? Let them fight it out and if they are crushed, we anti-imperialist leftists can at least say we truly supported their autonomy...it resulted in defeat, but yeah spirit...hooray for giving it your all!! ??????
