I think you need to realize that "controlling" children is not everyone's goal. It is giving children what they need to thrive. The capitalist culture would like all children to be docile and grow up to be docile worker bees. It that takes drugs, hey they will do that. I'm not even going to bother answering the rest of this ridiculous email - only two choices? Absurd. The fact that you refer to a child as "brat" shows how hopelessly twisted you are. Points well taken. I don't deny any of that what you list here does contribute largely to the problem in many cases and in many areas of the world. However, in the case of my friend's blood clot case these doctors are well fed, well paid, not overworked in a community care clinic (though they may be undertrained) physicians. In Bob's case it was not some overworked doc in a poor neighborhood (who might actually have done a better job when you think about it) it was several docs in Malibu and ...

Drugs prescribed in combination with others can produce extreme adverse reactions and personally I've heard of this happening when the doctor did not bother to check the complete patient history. Hell some don't even have a form for a patient to write the drugs down that they are currently taking. Then there is overprescribing and not doing proper blood tests to see if there is li ...

Max Sorry I missed you, I was offline, didn't get thismessage til now. I recently wrote Jim Lehrer to complain about his having so many right wingers on the NewsHour and recommended that he bring you on. The broadcast segment on China releasing the US crew members (4/11/01) was one of the most inane compilation of pundits I have seen yet. David Brooks of the Weekly Standard made some comment about if a dirty old man was pawing you and you wanted something from him maybe it was better to let hi ...

Thanks, Ian The story you posted "Misprescribed medicines" is the one reported about today on KPFK but there is another study too recently released by Rand (below). I don't think Rand has hit a major problem, however, which is that doctors are poorly trained in diagnosis. In my many years of being involved with disability, I know of too many instances where the doctor could not locate the source of a problem, even something as obvious as a blood clot in a leg, and the consequences wer ...

Damn, I knew it was bad but it is even worse than I thought. Just heard on KPFK (the science guy show) that a new report (Rand, I think) shows that doctor incompetence is the third leading killer in the US, only outranked by heart disease and cancer. -- Marta
