587 [lbo-talk] Huffington at AEI -- rank: 1000
Arianna Huffington's roots? See the American Enterprise Institute web site. Huffington now gets invited to speak at left forums all over the nation. Huffington has some of left enraptured by her boldness but I am still sceptical of her intentions. Hard to say but she may be one of those right wingers planted on the left. See: http://www.aei.org/news/newsID.16239,filter./news_detail.asp The Election of 1996 and our comming choice between freedom and entitlements By Harvey Mansfield, Arianna Huf ...

591 [lbo-talk] Bush at Boeing -- rank: 1000
OK I am way over the top on posting today. Last one. The LA Times sports a picture of Bush giving a thumbs up to the workers at Boeing in St. Louis. He is smiling, confident, like God has smiled upon him. No boos reported. http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/asection/la-na-bush17apr17,1,493514.story?coll=la%2Dnews%2Da%5Fsection The workers who gathered to hear Bush gave him a rousing welcome. And the president at times seemed ebullient. After finishing his remarks, as he prepared to get dow ...

> > >You were arguing that they were choosing to do this in preference to tax >hikes, which was false. > It wasn't false. In the beginning Davis proposed Draconion cuts. He stuck by them for months. He tinkered around with budget cuts for months. The resistance was built up. Now he decided to propose taxes. However, it still isn't clear that the taxes he has proposed are enough to offset the cuts. Poor people are being pitted against poor people here. It is just as nasty a ...

598 [lbo-talk] a shred of hope -- rank: 1000
I am not aware of any movement on the Prop 13 front. Even with Prop 13 we had money to expand Medicaid and education. This deficit was in large measure caused by the collapse of the dotcom industry which caused a huge loss of state revenue. The federal government has refused to help bail out the states. New York City is in a crisis similar to California's. Why isn't there more pressure on the feds to do something? If they can give Bush $80 billion for the attack on Iraq well ........what abo ...
