1261 Economy and Inebriation -- rank: 1000
A while back there was a discussion about social causes of alcoholism. Alec, I think you raised the question. There is an article in the LA Times this morning, "Economy, Inebriation Linked in Mongolia" (Associated Press), making a direct link between increased use of alcohol in Mongolia and the transition from communism to capitalism. It's terribly sad what is happening there, poverty and unemployment have soared. I don't have a scanner or I would post it here. Marta Russell

I always liked the fact that Spike Lee calls his film production company Forty Acres and a Mule. I hope the Conyers proposal is a better deal than the never delivered forty acres and a mule but would highly surprised if anything ever comes to fruition given the government's history of renegging on such promises, including treaties with the Native Americans. Still I am curious about what Conyers is proposing if you care to elaborate. Marta Charles Brown wrote: > Some African American activists ...

1264 tone -- rank: 1000
Louis and all, I think what Doug meant is that some people have objected to him about other participants style of discourse, not to point a finger at you. It is always subjective, what one person finds offensive another may not. Rakesh has said he can handle what Carol said. While some people may feel that "civility" has been breached, I think the last thing we need to do is go into our respective corners about this. Whoever said that the left has traditionally had these problems is ...

1267 aspartame & methanol & ms. -- rank: 1000
Greg, Thanks for this additional clarification. The talk was given before a gathering of environmentalists, so I think the conspiracy tone, i.e., "they" are doing this or that, is directed at corporate polluters and creators of toxins in general. There was an investigative story about how aspartame was first developed in chemical weapon research in one of the "progressive" publications some time back, either In These Times or Mother Jones?? maybe... MONSANTO is at it again. My New Year's Resolution: start 1999 free of brain killing chemicals. States could sue Monsanto to recover Medicaid costs like they did the tobacco industry.
