1236 Making the rich richer -- rank: 1000
The LA Times (Sunday) Business section ran a column by James Flanigan stating that the Congress intends to eliminate the estate tax. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz) and Bob Kerrey(D-Neb) have proposed a bill to repeal the tax (now at 37% of inheritances over $650,000). Someone interviewed for the article points out that abolishing the tax would further encourage maldistribution of income and wealth, but Flanigan argues that the current U.S. tax is too little to do the job of equalizing opportunity(that's a new ...

http://www.radio4all.org/fp/mainstream.htm May 26, 1998 KPFK Programmers Ordered to Mainstream Content; Advocacy Journalism is "Out" By Lyn Gerry Some of the criticisms leveled at the programming changes which have taken place at Pacifica radio in the past three years are that the air has become less diverse and intellectually stimulating, more predictable and politically mainstream. Listeners have complained that presentations by radical speakers such as Noam Chomsky are only aired du ...

1239 Zinn on Twentieth Century -- rank: 1000
I recently picked up a copy of Howard Zinn's latest revised "The Twentieth Century: A People's History" but it appears as though disabled people don't rate as "the people." In this "history" book about the 20th Century with a new section on the Reagan and Bush eras, there is absolutely no mention of the Americans with Disabilities Act anywhere that I can find, or the fact that there was a new civil rights movement in this country after the one in the 60s. What a sh ...

1242 LA Cops Kill Again -- rank: 1000
In passing this along, I would add that both shooting victims were women and they had mental disabilities. Tyisha's friend called the police to help her because she was depressed and suicidal, and Margaret had a schizophrenic condition that was being (or had been previously) treated with drugs. Being homeless, I don't know if she was still taking them. marta -------------------------------- Reprinted from the June 10, 1999 issue of Workers World newspaper -------------------------------- LOS ...

For those who may be interested . . . Green Left Weekly published an op-ed of mine on the Supremes decision for business on the definition of "disabled." 1244 Marc Cooper on Pacifica -- rank: 1000
Cooper and the station manager(Schubb) of KPFK (LA) have consistently defended the national board. While it IS hard to discern the details, there is NO question that KPFK (and Cooper) has become more like a liberal talk show station than a radical one. Schubb was doing another reach out to the community the other day and defended having other opinions (particularly Arianna Huffington) on to have "debates." But what Schubb doesn't say is that when Huffington is on Cooper's show, there ...

1245 Working Class History Test -- rank: 1000
This an aside about Washington, but may be of interest to some. According to my family historian (my aunt) during the Revolutionary War when Washington was in North Carolina, the Brits happened to decide to take residence at the farm of a relative of mine. The daughter, who was only about 16 at the time, overheard that the Brits knew where Washington was camped out and planned to attack him. This young woman rode bareback in the night to warn Washington of the danger. For this he awarded her ...
