1126 working the SAT system -- rank: 1000
Here is my rant on this one.. Disability activists are sometimes reluctant to cast dispersion on those claiming disablement but some of us have observed that when there is a social advantage to be had by claiming disability, people *will* do it. Usually there is more stigma/downside than gain, but regarding SAT test procedure exemptions like this and parking places - what a bonanza for those individuals who see opportunity to get an edge. Remember the UCLA football jocks who lied to get handi ...

1128 What's Missing? -- rank: 1000
A friend of mine who teaches disability studies posted this to another listserve. He asked, what's missing? progressives get up in > the morning and go about the work of fighting racism, sexism and > homophobia, defending the environment, organizing trade unions and > tackling corporate hegemony. The answer is -- there is no mention of disability or ableism. Progressives, in the Nation's view, obviously aren't in the work of fighting disability discrimination or ableism. What's worse, ...

1130 Rich overthrow government for themselves -- rank: 1000
I know, I know, enough with the Huffington stuff already but I just can't resist. A major pulling the wool over the KPFK listeners eyes is going on here in LA during the fund drive. Arianna Huffington was on KPFK with Marc Cooper yesterday pushing her book and ideas (the book is a gift when one subscribes to KPFK during the funddrive). She said that Bush could have made a real gesture towards doing something about poverty if he just donated some money (I'm not sure where from, it wasn't clear. ...

JKSCHW at aol.com wrote: > If I say that David Irving, the holocaust denying historian of Nazi Germany, is a psycho or a psychopath, anyone who gets upset on behalf of the mentally ill is missing the point. I am not insulting the mentally ill, least of all by using a term which I am now told doesn't actually apply to any mentally ill persons any more. I disagree. You are using the term in a pejorative fashion when you disagree with his views. You don't know that he is "psychotic," ...

1133 FW: If you can't beat'em, slur'em: ABC attacks organic food -- rank: 1000
I went up against Fumento in the San Diego Union-Tribune a number of years ago on the Americans with Disabilities Act. He was calling for its demise. There was one bit of truth to what Fumento said in his piece. Taking the side of small business and criticizing the lack of activism from corporations to undo the ADA, Fumento said that no corporate CEO in his right mind would oppose an Act that everyone thinks is to help Stevie Wonder (or something like that). I agree for a different reason. Co ...

1135 Murray raves again: capitalist patriarchy hardwired! -- rank: 1000
Of course Margarent Sanger, the mother of Planned Parenthood was a eugenicist. Recently I learned that Helen Keller supported it too. As you can imagine that is a real downer for disability activists. Now we have to have some separation from her too, a lefty crip. Marta Michael Perelman wrote: > Sure, Keynes too. 1136 facts, science, muck and what ought to be done -- rank: 1000
I need some clarification. My understanding is that private insurance does not pay for abortion, like it doesn't pay for contraceptives -- maybe this has changed?? Women seeking abortions then, must pay for it themselves unless they qualify through Planned Parenthood or some other funding mechanism - is that correct? They don't need to get a prescription from a doctor to have an abortion either if I've got it right. They can go straight to a clinic. What is the current battle being waged for ...

This didn't seem to go through the first time - references to the thread have been lost. Here goes again. Yoshie, I'm going to respond to some things line by line then give a summary at the bottom. sorry this is long, but I couldn't see anyway else to fully address the points you raise. Many women who have abortions do not have them because there is a medical reason to do so, so I would not frame abortion as a medical decision. Unless the woman's life or health are threatened it is not medically necessary to have an abortion. It is a social decision that the woman makes: to propagate or not to propagate. The procedure is a medical procedure but the woman's decision oft ...

Laura -- I've been meaning to thank you for that GREAT article you wrote about the ADA in November. It was truly a work of art and I did my best to get it out through disability circles. As for W. and Rice and Cheney and Evans et al -- I think we've got a bunch of gold-diggers on our hands-- who will be mostly looking for ways to manipulate government to line their pockets and further enrich the Bush clan-circle of friends. Hail to the Thief - we ain't seen nothin yet. Marta Lflanders at aol.c ...
