Lisa & Ian Murray wrote: >He bases his estimate on stock market gains of about 12 percent a year -- That's still pretty optimistic, even if it is less than we've seen lately. Total nominal return, including reinvested dividends, was 10% a year from 1900-99. Coming after a period of spectacular returns (17% from 1982-99), that would be pretty unusually high. But hey, America's the land of opportunity. Doug

[The Nation didn't put this on their website. They also cut a longish discussion of the growth vs. distribution controversy, and a discussion of the Dollar/Kraay paper, Growth Is Good for the Poor, a version of which discussion will appear in the next LBO, now returning from its long summer vacation while its editor was scribbling about the New Economy.] The Nation - October 2, 2000 Stiglitz and the Limits of 'Reform' Doug Henwood It's global protest time again. 33610 abortion -- rank: 1000
More on abortion... Just to make things clear in advance, I'm not arguing that the Dems are "worse" on the issue - just that they're not as good as NOW seems to believe. Between 1988 and 1992, the number of abortion providers fell by 8%; from 1992 to 1996, it was down 14%. When's the last time Clinton offered a strong endorsement of the right to abortion? Here, according to a search of the White House web site, is almost everything of substance he's said on the issue this year. His def ...

33613 Fwd: Voucher Gains Overstated in Study -- rank: 1000
[Is Martin "Conroy" is Martin Carnoy?] New York Times - September 15, 2000 New Doubt Is Cast on Study That Backs Voucher Efforts By Kate Zernike Two weeks ago, prominent researchers released a study showing significant gains by black students who had been given vouchers to help pay for private school. The finding lent support to backers of voucher programs at a time when they have become an election-year issue. But now a company that gathered data for the research in New York, one of t ...

33615 abortion -- rank: 1000
Lots of pro-Gore lefties are making the argument that a vote for Nader is a vote to end abortion. Here's the history of U.S. abortions, according to the CDC (the 1997 numbers are preliminary). The rate of abortions actually declined more quickly during the Clinton years than during the Reaganbush years. This is not to argue that a high abortion rate is good in itself, and I'm sure there are lots of complications behind these numbers, but still... Doug ---- ABORTION RATIO AND RATE, U.S. ratio ...
