Miles Jackson wrote: >It's always been >strange to me how journalists have little or no background >in social science research methods. What's strange about that? Mainstream journalists are typically not merely lacking in such background, but hostile to anything that looks like rigorous inquiry. They're some of the most anti-intellectual people around. They'll call one expert, then call another, present them as "balanced" alternatives, and they've done their work. If they're f ...

31803 song -- rank: 1000
Media critic Mark Crispin Miller circulated a demo tape a while back, a folk song called "Queen of the Forest" ("say goodbye to your animal friends..."). I've just MP3d it, and I'll be on Napster with it for the next hour or so (til midnight NYC time) and then most of tomorrow, from about 9 to 6 NYC time, and on into the future. If this is Miller's positive idea of postcorporate culture, Time Warner doesn't seem quite so bad. Doug

31805 a fan's notes -- rank: 1000
A lovely formulation from the new ish of Workers Vanguard (the one with the front-page headline "Pink Slips for Workers, Tax Breaks for Millionaires"): "Every four years, we get the chance (sometimes, at least) to choose which class enemy will tell us to sit down and shut up." Also, Mumia's column in this issue includes this quote from Brig Gen William Looney (both the name and the quote seem too good to be true), sourced to William Blum's Rogue State (p. 159): "If they ...

31806 Fwd: ISO and SWP Break Up! -- rank: 1000
[via Chuck0] from ISO Steering Committee March 12, 2001 Dear comrades: As some comrades will have already heard, the SWP Central Committee has severed all ties with the ISO and is encouraging other groups in the International Socialist Tendency (IST) to do likewise. On Monday, March 5, the ISO received a letter (attached) signed by Alex Callinicos and Panos Garganas (of SEK in Greece) announcing that they no longer considered us part of the IST. The letter asserts that the "final straw" ...

The buzz on the Pacifica lists is that this morning's debate on Democracy Now between boardmember (and corporate lawyer at the unionbusting firm Epstein Becker and Green <http://www.ebglaw.com>) John Murdock (defender of HMOs <http://www.ebglaw.com/atty_bio_59.htm>) and former DN co-host Juan Gonzalez was a clear victory for Murdock, and a "disaster" for the SavePacifica crowd. Anyone hear it? Any comments? Doug

[From the DLC's daily. Something From & Nathan agree on!] 2.) A New Democrat Response to Robert Reich We've gotten a number of e-mails and phone calls from New Democrats wondering if we had anything to say about former Labor Secretary Robert Reich's angry screed in the March 12 Washington Post declaring the Democratic Party "dead." Reich also took a few wild swings at the DLC. DLC founder and CEO Al From responds in a political memo on NDOL.org: http://www.ndol.org/ndol_ci.cfm?kaid ...
