23852 [lbo-talk] VV fires Richard Goldstein -- rank: 1000
[This is sad, and further evidence of the VV's endless decline. Goldstein was at the Voice for like 40 years, and I'm not kidding. In June 1969, the Voice's offices were over the Stonewall bar. Goldstein, then married and straight, recalls looking out the window at the developing riot, and saying to a colleague, "I hope those people get what they want." This is Gawker's report <http://www.gawker.com/topic/richard-goldstein-yes-laid-off-at-the-voice-018857.php>] Richard Goldstein: ...

Chronicle of Higher Education - August 6, 2004 Spike Lee's Blind Spots on Lesbianism By DAVID YAFFE Every October 11, students, professors, and administrators across the United States are supposed to out themselves. In that annual ritual known as "Coming Out Day," a swirl of festivities covers campuses in a wash of pink triangles, Indigo Girls posters, and AIDS-awareness pamphlets. LUG's (Lesbian Until Graduation) and BUG's (Bisexual Until Graduation) mingle with the newly declared lif ...

<http://abcnews.go.com/sections/politics/TheNote/TheNote.html> [...] Music Makes (Some of) the People Come Together: The smart and hip folks at Move On PAC and America Coming Together (ACT) have come up with a grand scheme for (1) reaching lots and lots of young voters, (2) raising lots and lots of $$$, and (3) filling the void left by the cancelled Lollapalooza tour. Vote For Change, a concert series of epic proportions, is officially out from under wraps. In no uncertain terms, some of t ...

23857 [lbo-talk] Bob Weir: Nader's an "asshole" -- rank: 1000
New York Daily News [Rush & Molloy] - August 3, 2004 The Grateful Dead's Bob Weir is pleading with Deadheads everywhere not to vote for Ralph Nader. Performing on Saturday in Boston, Weir told the band's followers to be sure to vote, but the exorted, "Don't vote for Nader. I know him. He's an a--hole," our spies tell us. The band then broke into "Johnny B. Goode," a theme song of the Kerry-Edwards campaign ...

[via nettime] Date: Tue, 3 Aug 2004 13:34:04 -0400 From: t byfield <tbyfield at panix.com> Some group styling itself "Jibjab" made a cutesy animation mocking the US presidential candidates -- set to the tune of Woody Guthrie's "This land is your land." The company that holds the rights, Ludlow Music, isn't happy with this and sent Jobjab a cease-and-desist letter. Lyrics from "This land is your land," a populist anthem, include: As I was walkin' - I saw a si ...

23859 [lbo-talk] swing polls -- rank: 1000
Shane Mage wrote: >This is amazing. So the "credibility" of US polls rests on the >proposition that some proportion of their sample consists >of liars about voting behavior who nevertheless are telling >the truth about voting intentions? Yeah, and why is that so incredible? There's no bandwagon effect when the winner-to-be is unknown. (People also exaggerate their voting behavior; Census turnout figures are often 10 or more percentage points higher than the actual.) And th ...

23860 [lbo-talk] Wall St: we can live with Kerry -- rank: 1000
Wall St. Sees Little to Fear from Kerry Presidency By Ritu Kalra Mon Aug 2, 3:52 PM ET NEW YORK (Reuters) - It might be too early to say Wall Street's money managers are warming to the idea of John Kerry (news - web sites) as president, but an increasing number are taking the idea seriously. In early June, all 37 hedge fund managers surveyed by International Strategy & Investment thought George W. Bush would win a second term, but by last week, 53 percent were expecting a Kerry victory. New York Post [Page Six] - August 3, 2004 JUST ASKING WHICH congressman recently voted for the Marriage Protection Act, which prohibits same-sex marriages, even though his sister is a lesbian "married" to another woman - and the lovers even have kids. "We wonder why he has one of the most anti-gay voting records in congress," fumed one gay activist. The lawmaker is ducking phone calls about his sister, even though his family has accepted her homosexuality. Their mother " ...

23863 [lbo-talk] swing polls -- rank: 1000
I forwarded Shane Mage's idea for the only reputable poll, all others being crap, to AAPOR. A couple of early responses: * Brits do these polls all the time - "swing" is big in Brit psephology. * In the U.S., they do ask whom people voted for in 2000, but the reported results don't match the original - people inflate their vote for the winner. 23864 [lbo-talk] No Bounce for Kerry -- rank: 1000
Nathan Newman wrote: >And note, some of the big differences between the poll numbers are whether >they poll "likely voters" versus "registered voters." Yes. There's been some chatter among the AAPORites about how hard it is to weight things this year because of apparently stronger voting intentions than earlier years. Interesting factoid that I think Russert cited on Sun - if the major demographic subgroups vote the way they did in 2000, Gore's 500k margin would be 3m f ...
