23596 [lbo-talk] meat for 9/11 conspiracists -- rank: 1000
<http://www.zogby.com/news/ReadNews.dbm?ID=855> On the eve of a Republican National Convention invoking 9/11 symbols, sound bytes and imagery, half (49.3%) of New York City residents and 41% of New York citizens overall say that some of our leaders "knew in advance that attacks were planned on or around September 11, 2001, and that they consciously failed to act," according to the poll conducted by Zogby International. The poll of New York residents was conducted from Tuesday Aug ...

23597 [lbo-talk] MM on RNC -- rank: 1000
USA Today - August 31, 2004 The GOP doesn't reflect America Michael Moore, Filmmaker NEW YORK - Welcome, Republicans. You're proud Americans who love your country. In your own way, you want to make this country a better place. Whatever our differences, you should be commended for that. But what's all this talk about New York being enemy territory? Nothing could be further from the truth. We New Yorkers love Republicans. We have a Republican mayor and governor, a death penalty and two nuclear pla ...

23598 [lbo-talk] polling complications -- rank: 1000
Interesting thread on the AAPOR website: there's some anxiety that presidential polling this year is seriously problematic. Phone polls undersample young people (18-35 - esp those who don't live with older family members), nonwhite people, and men. The first two of those groups are quite pro-Kerry; the last, pro-Bush. You can partly correct for the undersampling with statistical technique, but obviously the bigger the adjustment, the greater the likelihood of error. So polls could be significant ...

[from National Journal's convention daily] QUOTED "It would have been easier to go to a more Republican city, but it's not a bad thing to have disagreements. The other thing protesters need to remember is that we're Republicans. We pack." -- Colorado Delegate Kendal Unruh, dismissing concerns about unpleasant run-ins with convention interlopers.

You agree with Slavoj Zizek! <http://www.leftbusinessobserver.com/Zizek.html> [...] The first problem: the idea was, "Let's bring democracy to Iraq." A couple of simple facts have to be mentioned here. First, for simple geopolitical strategic interests, the U.S. cannot afford democracy in the Middle East now. And I'm not playing any Marxist games abou ...

23606 [lbo-talk] pollster wonders? -- rank: 1000
[a post to AAPOR's listserv] Does anyone else get the feeling that the polling biz is about to pull another Literary Digest? I don't do election polling, and I don't know what statistical techniques various firms are using, but I wonder if the polling outfits aren't falling prey to big time coverage error, seriously undercounting Kerry supporters. Huge numbers of new voters are being registered each week (and are thus not included in the polls we see), more and more younger voters have only cel ...
