20658 [lbo-talk] polling experiment -- rank: 1000
A Republican pollster has done a poll of 12 "battleground" states. When they weight the results conventionally, Bush leads by 0.2%. When they weight the sample to match "minority" turnout in 2000, it shows Kerry 3.5% ahead. When they weight by the Census figures, Kerry's 5.2% ahead. Results at <http://www.fabmac.com/FMA-2004-10-27-Battleground-Ballot.pdf>. Doug

20660 [lbo-talk] Palast: Florida Computers Snatch Thousands of Votes from Kerry -- rank: 1000
CONGRATULATIONS, MR. PRESIDENT! FLORIDA'S COMPUTERS HAVE ALREADY COUNTED THOUSANDS OF VOTES FOR GEORGE W. BUSH Before one vote was cast in early voting this week in Florida, the new touch-screen computer voting machines of Florida started out with a several-thousand vote lead for George W. Bush. That is, the mechanics of the new digital democracy boxes "spoil" votes at a predictably high rate in African-American precincts, effectively voiding enough votes cast for John Kerry to in a t ...

Oh >wait, Derrida defended Paul De Man's nazi symapthies didn't he? I'll leave it to a Derridean to refute the second sentence, but my impression is that most people who've posted really like the Eminem video. I know I do. So whom are you talking about? Doug

20663 [lbo-talk] Iraq joke -- rank: 1000
[a joke reportedly making the rounds in Iraq, which apparently credits too much to Bush's expertise with the subtle meanings of words] President Bush was visiting a primary school and he visited one of the classes. They were in the middle of a discussion related to words and their meanings. The teacher asked the President if he would like to lead the discussion on the word "tragedy." So the illustrious leader asked the class for an example of a "tragedy". One little boy sto ...

<http://wanniski.com/showarticle.asp?articleid=3935> A Vote for Senator Kerry Oct 27 2004 Memo To: Website Fans, Browsers, Clients From: Jude Wanniski Re: Making Up My Mind There are a lot of little reasons why I should be voting for the re-election of President Bush, for whom I gladly cast my vote in 2000. The one big reason why I will vote for Senator Kerry next Tuesday is that he is an internationalist, as am I, and Mr. Bush has become an imperialist - one whose decisions as Command ...

20665 [lbo-talk] another mea culpa of sorts -- rank: 1000
Boston Globe - October 27, 2004 Eyewitness to a failure in Iraq By Peter W. Galbraith IN 2003 I went to tell Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz what I had seen in Baghdad in the days following Saddam Hussein's overthrow. For nearly an hour, I described the catastrophic aftermath of the invasion -- the unchecked looting of every public institution in Baghdad, the devastation of Iraq's cultural heritage, the anger of ordinary Iraqis who couldn't understand why the world's only superpower w ...

Wojtek Sokolowski wrote: >Let's be real - who gives a shit about criminals >and immigrants? I think this is too pessimistic. Americans pay lip service to this being a nation of immigrants, and sometimes they even mean it. We're certainly more welcoming than Australians, Japanese, or Europeans. If people come, work hard, and become citizens, there's plenty of mainstream appeal there. And with ex-felons, you can make a very mainstream argument that having paid one's debt to society, one shou ...
