20446 [lbo-talk] me on Blackburn's pension scheme -- rank: 1000
I just posted the text of my comments on Robin Blackburn's Banking on Death, his 530-page program for transforming the public pension system, which I delivered at a New School conference last Saturday. It's at <http://www.leftbusinessobserver.com/NSPensions.html>. Sorry, it's mainly text - a few links, minimal graphics. Doug

20448 [lbo-talk] Malkin too much for AU Reps, Bush admin -- rank: 1000
Washington Post - September 12, 2004 Reliable Source Richard Leiby Flame-throwing syndicated columnist Michelle Malkin, whose latest book supports the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, was all set to appear at American University tomorrow as the year's kickoff speaker for the College Republicans. But her topic proved too hot for them to handle. Abruptly canceling her speech last week, Mike Inganamort, president of the campus Republicans, told Malkin in an e-mail: "Our fi ...

[wow, stunning nonsense - could it be that the unemployment news was more upbeat in Clinton's day because the number was falling towards multi-decade lows, while it's 1.3 points higher now than when W took office and it's stayed stubbornly high? - Hassett, of course, is the co-author of Dow 36,000 <http://www.leftbusinessobserver.com/Dow36000.html>, a fact he omits from his bio on the AEI website <http://www.aei.org/scholars/filter.,scholarID.26/scholar.asp> (unless you click on &quo ...

20451 [lbo-talk] McLemee on Mann: democracy and mass murder -- rank: 1000
Chronicle of Higher Education - September 17, 2004 Delving Into Democracy's Shadows The sociologist Michael Mann took a detour from his epic study of power in human history. It led him straight to the horrors at the center of modern life. By SCOTT MCLEMEE Scholarly books often resemble the pyramids erected for minor officials in ancient Egypt. Impressive in their way -- and built to last -- they are, nonetheless, difficult to tell apart. By contrast, The Sources of Social Power, by Michael Mann, ...

20452 [lbo-talk] Nation editor KvH on Putin & Chechnya etc -- rank: 1000
[Chris Doss, Peter Lavelle, any comments?] The Nation - September 27, 2004 Putin's War by KATRINA VANDEN HEUVEL The bloody end to the hostage crisis in Beslan resulted in unfathomable human suffering. More than 300 children, parents and teachers died in the gruesome fifty-two-hour siege that began when heavily armed Chechens--and possibly other guerrillas from the Caucasus--stormed Middle School No. 1. This unconscionable slaughter of the innocents came just days after a bomber--most likely one ...

20455 [lbo-talk] MER on KER -- rank: 1000
[from today's Merrill Lynch Morning Market Memo - not new news, really, but the source is interesting] The President's lead in the polls may be more ephemeral than meets the eye-the Economist reports that its YouGov poll shows Mr. Bush with just a 1 point lead right now and the latest Zogby poll has the President ahead by only two points. The YouGov poll has the largest sample size of all (2,300) and instead of by phone, it is done by email. See page 27 of this week's issue.

ira glazer quoted: >Yet whoever wins the 2004 race will become the first U.S. president >to confront what sober-minded experts across the political spectrum >describe as an impending "fiscal catastrophe" lying right around the >corner. The short-term problem is that the boy president cut taxes on rich people, and the economy ...

Violence Sweeps Baghdad; U.S. Gunship Fires on Crowd By Ibon Villelabeitia BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A U.S. helicopter gunship fired at Iraqis milling around a burning U.S. vehicle in a Baghdad street Sunday during fierce battles in which witnesses and officials said 13 people had been killed and 61 wounded. Elsewhere in the city, at least seven car bombs and various outbreaks of violence killed nine Iraqis, and insurgents fired over a dozen mortar bombs or rockets around the U.S.-occupied Green Zone ...
