20404 [lbo-talk] Pew: Bush lead gone, pres race "dead even" -- rank: 1000
Kerry Support Rebounds, Race Again Even Strong Interest in Debates Voter opinion in the presidential race has seesawed dramatically in the first two weeks of September. Following a successful nominating convention, George W. Bush broke open a deadlocked contest and jumped out to a big lead over John Kerry. However, polling this past week finds that Bush's edge over his Democratic rival has eroded. Reflecting this new volatility in the race, the size of the swing vote has increased slightly since ...

[our leaders live in bubbles!] Bush hasn't taken a question from campaign journos in weeks <http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A24541-2004Sep15.html> Washington Post John Kerry isn't any better. He hasn't held a formal news conference or even answered questions from smaller groups of reporters -- an "avail" in campaign-speak -- in more than a month, writes Paul Farhi. "The two vice presidential candidates are not much different from their bosses," he reports.

[I thought the Dems had the advantage in the get out the vote operation, but here's a bit from a new ABC News poll in Pennsylvania] About one in five registered voters in Pennsylvania, 21 percent, say they've been contacted by a representative of the Bush campaign asking for their support. That compares with 14 percent who've been contacted by the Kerry campaign. The difference is a small but real one - and in a tight race, this kind of retailing can be crucial to turnout.

20415 [lbo-talk] cell phones & polling -- rank: 1000
An AAPORite reports that 7% of the U.S. pop has only cell phones, which are unreachable by pollsters (unsolicited calls to a cell phone are illegal, since they can cost money). They're disproportionally young. So this may introduce a systematic error to polls - and it's thought that this is also a Dem-leaning population. Doug
