12406 [lbo-talk] Trichet: markets returning to normal -- rank: 1000
NEWS ALERT from The Wall Street Journal Aug. 14, 2007 Euro-zone money-market conditions have "progressively gone back to normal," said European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet in a statement that came after several days of cash injections by central banks world-wide amid volatile swings in the markets. The ECB and Federal Reserve moved in the wake of a liquidity crunch set off by rising defaults on home loans. For more information, see: http://wsj.com/article/ 0,,SB1187 ...

12410 [lbo-talk] Pacifica news -- rank: 1000
Someone fired a gunshot from a passing car into the studios of KPFT, the Pacifica outlet in Houston. (Back in the late 1960s, the Klan blew up their transmitter.) The bullet penetrated a few windows and lodged in the door of the control room. No one was injured, though two people were doing a show at the time. Makes a failed fund drive look like good news!

Though she's a big backer of environmental causes, and even offers tips for low-carbon living on her personal website, she was busted by the British press for touring in a private jet with a massive entourage that required 13 trucks and vast amo ...

12416 [lbo-talk] Ed Hyman on the current conjuncture -- rank: 1000
[This is from Wall Street's favorite economist, Ed Hyman] Let's -- Start -- Thinking About Tomorrow Contd A global slowdown seems likely to weaken oil, at least cyclically. It was down -$4 last week. The GSCI was down a big -13 points. Inflation fears seem likely to recede if all this falls into place. The Fed may ease quite a bit. The dollar was up 0.5% last week -- flight to safety. Perhaps the dollar doesn't have to fall if the Fed eases. S&P up 21 Points Last Week With all the ups an ...

Wall Street Journal - August 13, 2007 'The Mark of Rove' By PAUL A. GIGOT Washington These are the days of Republican doubt, with President Bush fighting an unpopular war, Congress in opposition hands, and a 2008 presidential field trailing Democrats in nearly every poll. But don't tell that to Karl Rove, Mr. Bush's political alter ego, who even as he prepares to resign from the White House after six and a half years sees recovery ahead. Sitting in the book-lined living room of his townhome ...
