1113 And now for Gore? -- rank: 1000
>From this side of the Atlantic it looks as if the Democratic Party has just cracked. Clinton has had a very successful trip to Ireland but the statements by the four leading Democrats denouncing his conduct appear to be consistent with reports that the party is now deeply scared of the likely contents of the Starr report, and is preparing itself to confront Clinton to resign. I have been impressed but also a little surprised at the forebearance of US contributors to discuss Clinton. Why goss ...

1118 World financial reforms -- rank: 1000
Comments anyone? Or (although discussion of reforms may be appropriate in all other spheres of political struggle) since this is a question of reform in the world financial system, does the very act of commenting inevitably mean the subscriber has reformist tendencies and believes we should tail behind the bourgeoisie? More technical question: does anyone know how to strip out line end markers easily when taking an article from a web site, so that it will wrap around on an e-mail list with softw ...

1119 Hang Seng thru 10,000 -- rank: 1000
This morning the Hang Seng, the Hong Kong stock exchange index, has just gone through 10,000. A while ago I posted when it had gone through 9,000 Although helped by the Greenspan US interest rate reduction, this is a remarkable performance which has contributed to the rapid collapse of neo-liberalism/free market fundamentalism as an ideology. Coming on the day that the G7 are to announce a restructuring plan for the global financial system, it emphasises the contribution Hong Kong has made to re ...

1120 Pinochet in mental hospital -- rank: 1000
Strangely, or not so strangely, Pinochet has now sought refuge in a psychiatric hospital, presumably the modern equivalent of seeking sanctuary at the mediaeval church gates. According to Sky News, it is Grovelands Priory in Southgate, North London, although the BBC just politely says he has gone to a private hospital. He seems to be a bit short of spin doctors. 1122 IMF cannot save South Africa -- rank: 1000
A bit of a potboiler article Paul Krugmam in the latest Fortune, notes the massive insufficiency of global funds to deal with size of the current financial threats to countries. "take the rumour that the G7 will create a large Latin American rescue fund; at the time of writing the gossip says either $30 or $40 billion for Brazil or $100 for all Latin America... "So what? At the beginning of the summer, Latin American nations had more than $150 billion in foreign exchange reserves; Braz ...

1123 Fortune on Taiwan -- rank: 1000
In the scramble to distance themselves from neo-liberal market fundamentalist orthodoxy, the October 26th issue of Fortune (biweekly of TimeInc) marks another step, a one page article by Jim Rohwer on "Taiwan's Secret Weapon". The most eloquent point is the graph. This turns the fall of the Taiwan stock exchange by 45% since July 1997 into a striking success story; because the graph sails markedly higher by a wide margin of about 25% above the graph for Asian markets including China In ...
