Thanks to everyone, I am still devastated, and will be for a long time, but your kind words soften the blow a little. Yah, from my correspondences with Blankfort in the past, I would have to agree with Chip on this. 80 [lbo-talk] Gaza flooded after Israel opens dam gates -- rank: 1000
That's the problem, I believe Iranian press and Hamas as much as I believe the Israeli authorities.... So, who knows... http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3836334,00.html "In the Eshkol regional council, which borders the Strip, the claims were dismissed. The council said it knew nothing of such a dam. " A few Israelis have died from the floods also, so it is widespread in the south. 81 [lbo-talk] Avatar: The Exquisite Horror of The Strange Stranger -- rank: 1000
I thought this was a pretty good review. http://www.rifters.com/crawl/?p=959 One could go on trying to deconstruct the underlying ideology of the film, etc.,...and the new age gaia spirituality was daft, but..... Ohhhh, the eye candy! "Someone put a lot of thought into Pandora s wildlife; it was beautiful to behold, it was amazingly diverse, it even seemed (for the most part) phylogenetically consistent. Across a wide range of species, everything from nostril placement to jaw structure was ...

82 [lbo-talk] Progressively assessed speeding fines in Switzerland (in this case $290, 000 for 35 mph over limit) -- rank: 1000
Wah, that is pretty cool, if I get this right, you are fined in part according to your wealth. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8446545.stm *A Swiss millionaire has been handed down a record speeding fine of $290,000 (£180,000) by a court.* The man was reportedly caught driving a red Ferrari Testarossa at 137km/h (85mph) through a village. The penalty was calculated based on the unnamed motorist's wealth - assessed by the court as $22.7m (£14.1m) - and because he was a repeat offender. It is mo ...

Interesting, Yaron Brook the head of the Ayn Rand Institute is an Israeli, could that help to explain the Randy lovers of Zion? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaron_Brook http://blog.aynrandcenter.org/the-u-n-goldstone-report-and-just-war/ Where he argues that Israel (and the US) should get rid of any notion of constraint and proportionate response...worry about civilians in a war theater and such) Bryan Joanna wrote: > > > I suppose the only way one would know is to go to one of their &g ...

85 [lbo-talk] My Ayn Randian, libertarian loving relatives....argh... !!! -- rank: 1000
True, but I still think it is a relevant question because when I was 20 something, I didn't know one "Objectivist" personally. Definitely were the tendencies towards Anarchists and TAZ hippie types and perhaps the Ditto Heads or two, but no Randians. Now it seems to me that there is an upsurge in libertarians and Randy sorts, and I even had a friend (my age...40) recently come visit and he was reading The Fountainhead...(though he is a business owner and fancies himself an entrepreneur ...

Well, they are American Jews, and yah, they are libertarians with a love for Zion. With so much contradictory positions (the fact that they go to state universities, that at least one gets health care assistance from the state, etc.) cognitive dissonance on this subject doesn't seem so difficult. 88 [lbo-talk] My Ayn Randian, libertarian loving relatives....argh... !!! -- rank: 1000
Oh god. Has there been a large surge in Randian and libertarian worship among the 20 something crowd? I ask because my father's sister has has five daughters who had several boys who are now mostly in there early to late 20s, and it seems they are nearly all entranced by Rand, Nozick, and libertarian tripe in general. Lately, some of them have taken to use Facebook as their soap box. It is embarrassing to read their nonsense. I was wondering if others notice this trend, have to suffer this silli ...
