331 [lbo-talk] bagels/ethnicity -- rank: 1000
A block from my office in Jerusalem there is a quite decent tasting American style bagel store, but I always feel bad buying bagels from there because it is owned by an extremely nationalist orthodox family, and the place is always full of those Anglophone Zionist Orthodox types that more and more take over Jerusalem and make me happy that I only come to Jerusalem to work. But I keep going to the bagel store, so I guess that I am ideologically weak when it comes to my culinary tastes. On the oth ...

332 [lbo-talk] bagels/ethnicity -- rank: 1000
Funny thing, in Israel a bageleh is more or less a pretzel...often with salt. Though it has changed somewhat in the past years of Americanization of Israel, mostly, the only places to buy American style bagels is in locations with high anglo-saxon populations (especially Jerusalem). 333 [lbo-talk] American Rabbi equates gay pride parade with the slaughtering of dogs for consumption -- rank: 1000
Gay march: It s about immodesty, stupid http://www.ynetnews.com/Ext/Comp/ArticleLayout/CdaArticlePrintPreview/1,2506,L-3301318,00.html Problem with gay pride parade in Jerusalem is the sexualization of the issue Rabbi Levi Brackman Evergreen Colorado, where I live, is a dog loving town. People spend inordinate amounts of money on their dogs and care for them like they would for a loved one. Imagine the following scenario: A dog slaughtering factory decided to open its doors in downtown Evergreen ...

335 [lbo-talk] Economy of the Occupation Bulletin 7-8: Breaking the Labor Market The Welfare to Work Plan in Israel Focus on East Jerusalem -- rank: 1000
I may have sent a different version of this bulletin a couple of months ago (a shortened version was used as an article in News from Within), but this is the latest, unexpurgated version of the economic bulletin of the AIC. 336 [lbo-talk] completely confused? -- rank: 1000
Not to get into what I am sure is a long complicated, contorted, and contentious discussion, but I think there is more continuity in Marx's writing/theoretics than your statements below would suggest. 338 [lbo-talk] How the IDF blew chance to destroy short-range rockets -- rank: 1000
Today's article in Ha'aretz (see below) by Ze'ev Schiff, "How the IDF blew chance to destroy short-range rockets," reminded me of a controversy that began during the war, regarding some statements that Washington Post military analyst Thomas Ricks made on CNN on 6 August. Appearing on CNN s program "Reliable Sources," Ricks told viewers that Israel had intentionally left some Hezbollah launchers intact to ensure that there would be continued attacks against Israel: Aired Augu ...

339 [lbo-talk] Israeli Übermenschen -- rank: 1000
In my understanding (or misunderstanding), the usage of terms like Nazi and fascist when discussing present situations, is almost always lazy and sloppy; an effort that would be better put critiquing the specificities of a certain regime. More than really pointing to anything other than superficial similarities, they merely act as shorthand for our disgust for a particular leader or regime (If you only knew how often Israeli politicians sling the Nazi slur at one another...). Though there was a ...
