17 [lbo-talk] The Generationally 1% -- rank: 1000
I have been reading in some discussions of the OWS movement, a statement going along the lines of "Those born of parents in the one percent are almost guaranteed to remain part of the 1%, whereas those in the 99% are almost guaranteed not to become part of the 1%." I was just wondering who has good data on generational perpetuity of wealth. Bryan

18 [lbo-talk] To Doug -- rank: 1000
What's sad is not that he posts these blurbs, but that he never adds anything to the discussion. Knowing Jonathan, I think he could add something to the debate...but it is just unconnected blurbs about their own publications. 19 [lbo-talk] Doug: lecture at OWS tonight at 6? -- rank: 1000
Sadly, at the Milwaukee Demo yesterday, I saw a few people with Ron Paul signs... I wanted to ask them what the hell they were thinking, but I know that trying logic on a libertarian is wasted energy... No pics of the Ron Paul signs, but I took these at the demo: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150314926666367.336465.563576366&type=3 Bryan Sent from my iPad On Oct 16, 2011, at 7:30, Joseph Catron <jncatron at gmail.com> wrote: > On Sun, Oct 16, 2011 at 7:59 AM, Michael P ...

China isn't? Bryan On Oct 10, 2011, at 7:57, John Gulick <john_gulick at hotmail.com> wrote: > But when he sounds off about China, he sounds like a right-wing social democrat. All that crap about today's remaining communists being the most ruthless capitalists, and now (for the first time ever, huh?) capital accumulation being severed from bourgeois democracy. 22 [lbo-talk] Questions about Osama Bin Laden -- rank: 1000
Doug, That's just way too simple and reasonable an explanation. What's the fun in that? Bryan -----Original Message----- > Bin Laden would have had little value as a captive, and would have been a > serious liability. I think the question is, why kill him now? Because they only just found him now?

23 [lbo-talk] Comments on WSJ article "The Price of Taxing the Rich" -- rank: 1000
Thanks Sean, Those are all good answers, but for a slightly different argument. What I thought was novel about the argument in the article, was that it attacks the issue of taxing the rich from another position. It somewhat sidesteps or anticipates our usual counterarguments and argues that the volatility of a tax base that relies on the income of the wealthy is problematic, not so much that taxing the wealthy in and of itself stifles the economy (though there are hints to that in the article). ...

"Nearly half of California's income taxes before the recession came from the top 1% of earners: households that took in more than $490,000 a year. High earners, it turns out, have especially volatile incomes their earnings fell by more than twice as much as the rest of the populatio ...

26 [lbo-talk] Achcar's latest -- rank: 1000
There is a difference between Libya and Israel though. Israel is directly under the patronage of the US. If enough people/states demand a no-fly zone and the US feels the need to play the impartial policeman it pretends to be, they will just say (like Bush Sr. did regarding Shamir's statement that he would funnel US funds directly to the settlements), you are embarrassing us and you will stop, and Israel will complain but follow orders. 27 [lbo-talk] Libya -- rank: 1000
I am very well aware of how dumb smart-bombs are, and I know the potential for civilian carnage...I do think that your equation of fully fueled jet liners with missiles is a bit inaccurate...they are different ordnance. Whatever is done...actively taking out Ghadaffi's forces or standing back will result in some, most likely a lot, of civilian death and destruction...so that can't be the deciding factor...it lies above that in what social and political long term results will stem from this...wha ...

28 [lbo-talk] Libya -- rank: 1000
But can you accurately say that they are bombing the living shit out of the entire country? Or hitting tanks, Ghadaffi's offensive units and air forces? Should they be doing this even if that is "all" they are doing? I REALLY do not want to sound as if I am supporting US/EU actions, because I am very queasy about it, but I want to be accurate in assessment and description of what is going on. I think what the US/EU are doing is definitely not out of altruistic interests, it is a dange ...

I'm seriously interested in your understanding of this. If the US and company didn't intervene and the uprising was completely crushed, that would be good? Let them fight it out and if they are crushed, we anti-imperialist leftists can at least say we truly supported their autonomy...it resulted in defeat, but yeah spirit...hooray for giving it your all!! ??????
